Description: DM2005031413:GCP:MUSIC:PERSONALITY:16JUN1963 - Stunning, That's The Word For Gideon Nxumalo - Those who listen to Gideon Nxumalo's trio, as we did at the Wits University Great Wall, have a few suprises in store for them. Mr Nxumalo swings a brand new bat, which has a some what varied effect on his audiences. On the other hand, it must be said that Mr Nxumalo's playing has always been for the cosy, smoky night club, rather than the big jam session. His music is for the small dedicated ring of listers belonging to perhaps to the Brubeck 'Goes to College' school. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Title: Boy playing a marimba I
    Image Number: APN111698
    Media Id: 87_274
Path: african.pictures / Shuter & Shooter Publishers / Izak de Vries
Description: The marimba was carved by Albert M Munyai, one of the best-known artists in Venda, a region in the Limpopo province. Venda is known for its amazing wood carvers. The Venda culture uses drums and marimbas for religious activities. This little man is having fun playing it. I used a low shutter speed (1/25) and only natural light to capture his movement.

Description: A Taarab orchestra plays in the Cultural Music Club in Stone Town, Zanzibar. It is difficult to determine the precise history of the Taarab music in Zanzibar. However the legend has it that Taarab in Zanzibar was started by the Sultan Seyyid Barghash 1870-1888. It was this ruler who started it all in Zanzibar that later spread over all of East Africa. He imported a Taarab ensemble from Egypt to play in his Beit el-Ajab palace. Later on he decided to send to Egypt Mohamed Ibrahim to learn the music and he also learned to play the instrument know by the name of Kanuni. Upon his return he formed a Zanzibar Taarab orchestra. In 1905 Zanzibar's second music society Ikwhani Safaa Musical Club was established and continues to thrive today with around 35 active members. Ikwhani Safaa and Cultural Music Club founded at 1958 remained the leading Zanzibar Taarab orchestra.. Sound Captions: 20050702taarab1.amr20050702taarab2.amr20050702taarab3.amr
