Description: Like most small South African towns Fouriesburg was once a study in inequality. Across the valley in Mashaeng a teenager walks the dusty road home from school. The inequalities, however, are not nearly as marked now as poverty has become the condition of the whole town. Rural farming communities are under pressure in South Africa with the uncertainties in the agricultural sector compounded by rapid urbanisation.

Description: Pigs forage among the rubbish in a polluted river in Kibera slum. Unfortunately the smell of the river equalled the sight of the sewage. People who live in shacks beside the river are often forced to vacant their properties during heavy rains when the river banks flood. Tin-roofed houses can be seen on the hillside on the right of the photograph. Kibera is Africa's largest slum with over 550,000 people (one out of every five Nairobians) living in very confined and squalid conditions.

Description: Children from Kibera slum play outside their homes, in very unhygienic conditions. Rubbish covers the area like a thick vegetation mat, and is also deposited by the polluted stream flowing at the bottom of their back yard. Children are highly at risk living in this environment. Latrines with numbers on the green doors line the back of the photograph, providing a play space for children who watch the stream below them. Kibera is the largest slum in Africa, home to over 550,000 people, which constitutes one in every five people living in Nairobi.

Description: A family sits outside their home in Kibera slum in southern Nairobi. Competition for land is so great that this family is forced to live on the banks of a river that frequently floods during the wet season. The family are washing their clothes, hanging them up to dry beside the heavily polluted river. Kibera is the largest slum in Africa, home to over 550,000 people, which constitutes one in every five people living in Nairobi.
