Description: A Road Less Travelled: a reflection on the boundaries of Dr J. V. Larsen’s career. My father's life has been defined by boundaries, both good and bad! Many of these he crossed, some to his credit, and some to his detriment. Always, however, it was in the service of others and his God. In the 1960s he crossed the boundary of what was socially acceptable In a nation dominated by the socio-political and economic system of apartheid. As a recently qualified doctor he took his young wife to live in rural Zululand to serve and live among the poorest of the poor on a mission hospital, Charles Johnson Memorial Hospital in Nqutu, rural Zululand. Such was the multiracial character of that community and its impact of the surrounding area that the apartheid security police kept it under careful scrutiny. He crossed the boundary of personal ambition when in the early 1980s he was given the opportunity to go to the top of his profession as professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the largest tea

Title: Flooding & Drought in Northern Kenya. December 2006.
Path: african.pictures / Independent Photographers / George Philipas
Description: A child suffering from malaria sleeps in a ward at the Government-run hospital in Wajir, Northern Kenya. In December 2006, I flew into Wajir and other areas of Northern Kenya with the NGO Save the Children. The area had been cut off by road due to heavy flooding in the region. Following months of drought, common sense would have dictated that rainwater would have been beneficial to the 3.5 million in Northern Kenya said to be caught in the grips of famine. But the flooding had only exasperated already dire conditions there:By inundating the parched soil and displacing families and thereby creating more refugees. Refugees for whom it might be said, it was almost impossible to deliver humanitarian aid due to the impassable nature of the roads north from Nairobi.By the time we arrived in Wajir near the border with Somilia, the extreme heat had evaproated most of the water within a week. The stagnant pools left behind though had become breeding grounds for malaria-carrying mosquitos

Description: A victim of the post-election violence in the immediate period after the much-disputed election result was announced. The young man was shot in the stomach and had had surgery to remove any fragments. Masaba Hospital, Nairobi. The price of the violence on the common 'Mwanainchi' was terrible. Approximately 1,500 people were killed and nearly 250,000 were internally displaced. While Kenya faces an uncertain future, and fears of another outbreak of violence always looms large, what is certain is that the scars left on the Kenyan people by the crisis will take a long time to heal.

A shunt was surgically inserted in his head to control the fluid build-up, but this is a highly risky method of controlling his condition. The slightest infection will almost certainly be fatal. It is unlikely that Johnny will live past 20 years of age. On this occasion, Johnny is suffering from a combination of parasitic worms and malaria.
