Description: DM2000011112:SAED:MUSIC:THEATRE:MAY1960 - Dig This Musical - I'ts called Mkhumbane and it has just burst like thunder on Durban. It's a show with joy, with sadness, two hours of tuneful, deep-down pleasure. "See how dark it is, how quiet. Hardly anything is moving. Only some early person. Only some early buses in the street. Taking early persons to the town. From Mkhumbane." This is part of the haunting prologue to the Alan Paton, Todd Matshikiza musical, Mkhumbane/Cato Manor, which showed to full houses in Durban in the midst of the disturbances and the emergency. 'King Kong' Dhlamini, boxing champ and night-spot bouncer, didn't mix much with whites. Sort of moved in different circles. Drowned himself after getting stretch for killing his dame. Yet it is his turbulent life which has given South Africa a tense, rollicking, thrill-packed lesson in race co-operation, the King Kong jazz opera. The actors, the writers, dancers were black. The producers, the writers were white. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Description: DM2001082714:SAED:THEATRE:MUSIC:NOV1971 - Drum Beat, Joke Is On The Fortune Hunters - Phiri. Give us money. Give us freedom. Let our children eat. Let our children education. These are the cries we hear everyday. Phiri the new hit musical with a message capturing the throbbing, titillating mood of Soweto echoes these cries of the people. Although the musical is an adaptation of Ben Johnson's 300 year old play Volpone, Phiri is as fresh as tomorrow. Phiri is as frsh as tomorrow. Phiri is the brain child child of Barney Simon, who wrote the script and lyrics working with Oswald Mtshali, Wally Serote and Stanley Moitjuwadi of Drum. Veteran saxman Mackay Davashe and guitarist Cyril Magubane put the lyrics to music which has that lilting, fast beat of life in Soweto. (Photograph By Drum Photographer ©BAHA) cast Gusta Mnguni, Linda Bottoman, Abigail Kubheka, Martha Molefe, Zelda Malgas, Willie Molisi, Sarah Klaas, Stanley Dipetso and Thoko 'Sophie' Mgcina.
